Due to redirection of the Aral Sea's sources of water for agriculture, the Aral Sea has been shrinking fast since the 1960s.
Besides being extremely salty because water evaporation, the Aral Sea is heavily polluted, due to industrial projects, pesticides and fertilizer runoff, and weapons testing in an island in the middle of the sea during Soviet times.
This pictures are from the western part of the Aral Sea, the only part that remains with some water in Uzbekistan. The eastern part dried up in the summer of 2009.

Debido al desvío de las fuentes de agua del Mar Aral para usos agrícolas, el Mar Aral ha estado desapareciendo rápidamente desde los 1960s.
Además de ser muy salado debido a la evaporación, el Mar Aral está severamente contaminado, debido a projectos industriales, descara de pesticidas y fertilizantes, y pruebas de armas en una isla en medio del mar durante la época soviética.
Estas fotos son de la parte occidental del Mar Aral, la única parte que queda con agua en Uzbekistán. La parte oriental del mar se secó durante el verano de 2009.
