Every first Sunday of September, a water parade and then a series of rowing races, take place in the Canal Grande in Venice. Tradition says that the weather during the Regata is always good, as it was the case during 2018.

The water parade commemorates the welcome given in 1489 to Caterina Cornaro, the widow of the King of Cyprus, at her return to Venice. Boats in 16th century-style, with gondoliers in period costume, carry the Doge, the Doge’s wife and all the highest ranking Venetian officials along the Grand Canal.

Then, the regatta starts: a series of races divided by age and type of boats, from small children rowing a small part of the Grand Canal, to adults -which can row ver fast.
