The fountain is formed by a simple rectangular brick tub, with a wide border and rounded corners, which receives water from a lion head emerging from the small façade set on one of the smaller sides.

It was built in 1717 by Carlo Bizzaccheri and placed next to his other creation, the fountain of the tritons, still in Piazza della Bocca della Verità: in fact these fountains were always made near the most aristocratic fountains in order to satisfy the thirst for men and animals.

After 1870, when many buildings were demolished in the area for the construction of the banks of the Tiber, the fountain was moved to its present position.
